Abstract

The topic we set out to address concerns assimilation, one of the essential elements in the Portuguese colonization strategies in Angola. The topic is, in fact, pertinent, given that it referred to the total brainwashing of the native Angolans and their subsequent integration into Portuguese culture; in other words, it aimed at the total loss of the identity of the Angolan people, in addition to the annihilation of their authentic cultural aspects. This study used a qualitative approach, which helped in the development of ideas and contextualization of the phenomena and is quite essential in the generalization of data. And, in order to acquire the information, we consulted documents and works by authors who had already studied the subject. With regard to the analysis of the results, it was possible to conclude that a policy of destruction and extermination of the native social, cultural, political and economic structures was witnessed. In conclusion, we can state that assimilation in Angolan society was a very violent policy and deeply affected the psychological aspect of Angolans, to the point that many denied and rejected their own culture.
