4TH GRADE STUDENTS' UNDERSTANDING OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE HUMAN BODY: EXPLORATORY STUDY IN BENGUELA

Authors

Abstract

This article analyzes the level of understanding that 4th-grade students have regarding the structure of the human body at the Nº 7001 BLA School Complex in Bocoio, Benguela. This exploratory-descriptive study, based on a mixed-methods approach, used questionnaires semi-structured to identify students’ prior knowledge, difficulties, and perceptions. Data were processed through descriptive and categorical analysis, enabling the identification of learning patterns. Results show that although many students recognize basic parts of the human body, significant gaps remain concerning the functions and interrelationships of body systems. The predominance of traditional, lecture-based teaching methods was also found to hinder meaningful learning. The study recommends the adoption of active methodologies and visual resources, such as anatomical models, drawings, and practical activities, to enhance Environmental Studies teaching. It concludes that improving pedagogical strategies is essential for consolidating scientific knowledge at this educational level.
