Abstract

In Angola, there are moments of tension before, during and after elections. It is thought that the speeches of political leaders are somehow at the root of these tensions. The aim of this paper is therefore to analyse the polarity of the speeches of the political party presidents in order to understand the relationship between the speeches and the tensions in the periods in question. In order to understand this phenomenon, we analysed the 2022 election campaign speeches of two Angolan political parties: MPLA and UNITA. The study have the following methodological criteria: (i) extraction of written MPLA´s speeches retrieved from the official Facebook page (https://web.facebook.com/PresidedaRepublica); (ii) extraction of oral UNITA speeches retrieved from YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=wR4b-YwQj20 ); (iii) converting the speeches retrieved from YouTube into audios; (iv) transcribing the audios using EXMARaLDA Partitur Editor; (v) using SentiLex (Carvalho & Silva, 2015) as a seed word (Taboada, Brooke, Tofiloski, Voll, & Stede, 2011); (vi) calculating polarity using LinguaKit sentiment analysis (Gamallo & Garcia, 2017). The corpus used as the basis for analysis is made up of ten speeches, five for each of the parties, forming a minicorpus of 29,457 words. The results show that there are more positive than negative words in the speeches analysed. The abundance of words with positive polarities allows us to conclude that the tensions may have other motivations.
